Few professional endeavors involve so many participants, handling so much information, under such severe competitive pressure as management of the construction process.  Every constructor must have a well-developed sense of ethical conduct in order to perform successfully in this environment.

The American Institute of Constructors believes that its STANDARDS OF PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT are more than simple words.  Indeed, the practice of true professionalism entails a commitment to ethical conduct, and ethics education is an important part of continuing professional development.

The following materials are offered in support of traditional AIC programs developed by and for professional constructors.  It is our common goal to foster growth in the understanding, acceptance, and application of professional ethical conduct throughout the construction industry.

This program is directed, primarily, toward constructors and AIC student chapter members.  However, it should be of interest to and have applications for all construction program students and all individuals who regularly deal with contractors or who are otherwise directly involved in the construction industry.  The purpose of this program is:

  1. To create an understanding of construction ethics.

  1. To provide an awareness of the ethical questions that arises in normal construction business operations.

  1. To develop an understanding of the importance (consequences) of one’s actions (on our firms, our industry, ourselves, and others) when making ethical decisions.

  1. To create a better industry and environment in which to work.

This is not a program for those seeking answers to specific ethical questions.  This program does not, nor is it intended to, provide clear “Yes” and “No” answers.  Such decisions are for the participants to derive – if they can.
